Skilled Trade jobs are the perfect alternative to jobs that require a four-year degree. With skilled trade jobs, you’ll learn practical skills, technical skills, on-the-job training, avoid college debt, start a business, enjoy great pay, and the opportunity to grow and improve upon your career.

**Por favor, haga clic aquí para ver la versión en español de este artículo.

When it comes to road safety, it’s imperative for every truck driver to learn the basic rules of the road. In the United States, Truck transport is one of the main ways goods and products can reach their destination safely.

Since truck driving is a source of income for many Americans, getting to these destinations safely is crucial to their livelihood.

According to Policy Advice, there were 4,102 deaths in truck wrecks in 2017, showing a 52% increase since 2009.

With the surplus of careless drivers on the road, a healthy dose of safety tips will help to save your life both on and off the road.

Pre-Trip & Post-Trip Safety Inspections

Before and after your trip, make sure to perform a thorough vehicle inspection to ensure that your truck is safe to drive. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study discovered that mechanical defects, new tour routes, and fatigue are the most common causes of truck crashes. Additionally, issues with tires, wheels, and brakes seem to be the most common cause of accidents.

Be sure to inspect the truck’s headlights, turn signals, and the brakes. Take a reading of the truck’s tire pressure and verify that it maintains the recommended maximum. Document your findings and report any defects.

Also, be sure to check under the vehicle to confirm that there are no loose objects or liquid leaks. The truck load should be properly balanced and firmly placed in the correct area of the truck.

Here are two winter driving pre-trip inspection checklists that will help you stay safe! One checklist is for medium duty trucks and the other checklist is for heavy duty trucks.

Medium Duty Truck Checklist – Click here.

Heavy Duty Truck Checklist – Click here.

Bring an Emergency Kit

In case you find yourself in an emergency, it might be helpful to have an emergency kit with you. Fill the kit with trucking essentials like a road flare, a flashlight with a pair of fresh batteries, jumper cables, drinking water, and a phone charger.

Get Enough Rest

Every night, be sure to get an adequate amount of sleep. It is never wise to drive while your body is naturally drowsy. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states that driver drowsiness may impair a driver’s response time to potential hazards, increasing the chances of being in a crash. Furthermore, if you feel drowsy while driving, please choose a safe place, pull over, and rest.

Keep a Healthy Diet

Irregular eating or skipping meals may lead to fatigue and loss of sleep. When you are not well-rested, induced fatigue may cause slow reaction time, reduced attention, mood changes, reduced judgment ability, and lack of awareness. So, please make sure to eat well and take care of yourself.

Weather & Road Conditions

Be sure to check the weather reports and the changing road conditions before heading out.

Knowing what to expect on the road will help you take the necessary precautions and prepare you for driving in bad weather conditions.

Make Sure You’re Comfortable

At times, driving long-distances can be a daunting experience especially if you feel uncomfortable in your vehicle.

Make sure to bring comfy cushions, adjust the steering wheel, adjust the seat height and the back rest so that you can be comfortable during the long drive.

Also, please remember to take the necessary breaks every few hours so that you can get out of the truck and walk around.

Watch Out for Work Zones & School Zones

Reports state that roughly one-third of all fatal work-zone accidents involve large trucks. Please be mindful to slow down, maintain extra following space, and be prepared to stop. Be sure to obey all work and school zone signs and signals. Scan ahead for changing traffic patterns, be aware of vehicles entering your blind spots, and keep an eye out for road workers and flag crews.

Drive Defensively

Driving defensively encourages truck drivers to consistently be on the lookout for potential hazards and changes in driving and road conditions. A potential hazard may include watching out for blind spots. A blind spot is any area around the vehicle that cannot be seen by the driver.

Since the rear-view and side mirrors are not always effective for checking blind spots, drivers are encouraged to look over their shoulders and out the windows when changing lanes. It is also advised to leave plenty of room around the truck when merging. Other forms of driving defensively can include practicing the three-second rule, being prepared for emergencies, staying calm, always signaling, and slowing down.

Use Your Safety Belt

Every time you enter a vehicle, remember to always use a safety (seat) belt. Recent studies have shown that in 2014, 30% of truck drivers that were involved in fatal crashes were partially or completely ejected from their vehicles.

Safety belts help to save lives, they reduce injuries, and they help drivers stay inside and in control of their vehicles during a crash.

Slow Down for Curves

For large trucks, the posted speed limit may actually be too fast, especially on the exit and the entrance ramps. Failing to slow down for curves and ramps or driving too fast puts you at risk for truck spills, truck rollovers, and crashes.

When approaching curves, slow down to at least 5-10 mph below the posted speed limit to avoid spilling or rolling over. Remember to keep a safe distance of seven to eight seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you. During bad weather, increase the seconds to 14 seconds.

Stay Away from Distracted Driving

Distracted driving can occur inside and outside of your truck. Distractions inside the truck can include talking on your phone, sending a text, using dispatching devices, eating, drinking, reading, or adjusting the radio. Distractions outside of the truck can include looking at a passing object.

If something is drawing your attention away and taking your focus from the road, it’s definitely a distraction. A study found that 71% of large truck crashes occurred when the truck driver was doing something besides driving the truck.

Watch Out For Tailgaters

It takes a truck driver approximately a football field length to come to a complete stop, so please be sure to exercise caution when driving. Try to stay clear of aggressive drivers and tailgaters. If tailgaters are getting too close to your vehicle and are depriving you of the space you need to make a sudden stop; remain calm, use your turn signal, switch to a different lane, and let the tailgater overtake you. Remember to drive defensively and watch out for other vehicles and hazards on the road.

You then try to remind yourself that it’s nothing personal, but it’s been about the 5th or 10th time this has happened to you. When something like this happens, it’s so easy to doubt your abilities and put all of the blame on yourself, but what if it’s not all your fault?

Hiring managers have a lot of responsibilities. One of those responsibilities involves sifting through multiple applications and resumes to make sure they choose the right candidate for the position.

Although it’s a terrible feeling not hearing back from employers, here are some helpful solutions as to why you’re not getting a simple call back.

You Don’t Follow Up

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple follow-up email to the hiring managers to let them know that you’re still interested in the position. Now, the response time to the applicants can vary, but it all depends on the business needs of the company. According to a recruiter, it’s recommended that you actually wait 5 to 7 days after submitting an application to reach out to the recruiter for an application status.

If you complete your first interview and it’s been a week since you’ve heard back from the hiring managers, send them a follow-up email and see what their response is. A good tip to follow after completing your initial interview is to ask for any contact information and immediately send a thank you note after the interview.

Another thing to stay away from is following up way too much. If you follow up once to the hiring managers, let time pass by before following up again. Following up too much can spook the hiring managers away and they may not even consider hiring you for the position anymore.

They Might Just Be Really Busy

As a hiring manager, there are a lot of tasks to complete before hiring the right candidate for the job. Hiring managers are in charge of finding the right staffing requirements for new or open positions, they create detail job descriptions that attract the best candidates, they serve as the direct point of contact during the interview process, they market new job opportunities, and they make the final hiring decisions.

For every one job opening, an employer receives at least 118 applications and only 20% of those applications get interviews. So as you can see, hiring managers certainly have their hands full. Therefore, as a job seeker, it’s best to keep this in mind in case you begin to doubt your abilities or in the application process.

Lack of Organization

When the duties of a position in a company is unclear and the company itself is not organized in informing recruiters to reach back out to candidates, that can contribute to why you don’t hear back from hiring managers. Sometimes, the job position will already be filled up and the company might “forget” to respond back to the candidates, especially those that are patiently waiting to hear back about the position.

Other times, the company might lose the application/resume in the process and may not know how to get back to you about the position. Also, the hiring managers may have traveled or taken a really long vacation, resulting in you not getting a response of any kind.

Your Resume Doesn’t Look Professional

And sometimes, it might just be your application/resume! Make sure to clean up your resume and make it stand out amongst the dozens of applications that go through the system. This is why it is important to update your resume at least twice a year. Make sure that the resume looks professional and attractive. Since hiring managers have a responsibility of creating the job description, they are very particular about what they are looking for when screening a resume.

Many companies have a talent-management software that screen resumes and weed out 50% of the applications before hiring managers can even look at them. Moreover, as a job seeker, please include specific keywords in the resume so that it matches up with the job description that you’re applying for.

Your LinkedIn Profile Needs Work

Have you looked at your LinkedIn profile lately? Nowadays, about 70% of employers are screening potential candidates on social media. Go through all of your socials and clean up your social media so that employers can’t find anything on there that might deter you from getting that interview.

On your LinkedIn profile, add a professional image yourself, optimize your profile section with the most up to date information, and upload your resume with your qualifications and skillsets so that when employers come across your LinkedIn page and they like what they see, they can easily reach out to you for an interview.

Too Many Applicants

As mentioned before, there is an average of 118 applications for every one job opening. Now, that is a lot of applications — especially for a competitive job position. Here are four ways you can make your resume stand out amongst other applicants:

Make your application easy to read with short sentences and paragraphs

Use the STAR technique – Situation, Tasks, Actions, & Results

Create an online presence whether with a blog or a portfolio of your work

Make sure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors on your application

You Got Rejected

Rejection is never a great feeling but sometimes it might be the cold hard truth as to why you don’t hear back from employers. Sometimes, hiring managers may even email you and let you know that you got rejected but it is not always the same for every employer. Not knowing that you got rejected from a job can makes things easier when you want to move on and look for work elsewhere.

If you have a daunting feeling that you’ve been rejected, the worst thing to do is to give up. Instead, continue applying and be content in knowing that something better is on its way.

Keeping Their Offers Open

Most times, a company already has a budget for the position that you’re applying for and if you state an offer that may be out of their budget, they may consider other candidates that have stated offers within or beneath their budget.

When filling out an application, make sure you’re clear in understanding the salary range. If it doesn’t state it on the job description, research the salary range for the position and make a sound judgement on what you find.

You May Be Overqualified

In a way, being overqualified can be shown as a backhanded compliment. Although, the defeat is not easy to go through, the rejection shows that you should be applying to roles that are more challenging and fitting for your qualifications.

On the other hand, you may not hear back from hiring managers because you’re underqualified for the position. This is why it is so important to read the job description carefully of what you’re applying for. Unless, you have similar job skills that you can incorporate into your resume from the job description, it is not a good idea to apply for a job in which you are definitely underqualified.

Your Words Have Impact

Be careful of what you write down or say in your interview, application or resume. In a job application/interview, words can definitely make or break your career journey. For example, if a job you’re trying to get hears you or sees you bad mouthing your previous employer, they may definitely not want to consider you for the position.

To help you be mindful with your words, get someone to practice interviewing you for your dream position or have them look over your application to make sure that it’s professional and grammatically free of errors.

Applying Too Many Times

Lastly, if you apply too many times to one company, you might as well move on to doing something else. Don’t show the company just how desperate you are by applying to every single job they have posted. That is truly a waste of time. If you’re not careful, applying for multiple positions to one company could result in an automatic rejection for any of the positions you applied for. Besides, applying to a lot of these positions at one company can confuse the employer in knowing which position is the right fit for you.

By now, it’s no surprise that the Covid-19 Pandemic has turned everyone’s lives upside down – especially in their careers. So many people have lost their jobs, filed for unemployment, and are frantically looking for their next career role.

According to Catalyst, a weekly report on unemployment claims states that 48 million people in the United States have filed for unemployment for the first time since mid-march 2020. The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy reports that the United States has lost 20.6 million jobs since mid-march. The high levels of unemployment and job losses have not been seen since the Great Depression era.

Though the numbers continue to rise, Empire Workforce Solution is available nationwide to elevate some of your career path concerns. Here are 7 valuable tips to help you find your dream job during the pandemic:

Update Your Resume

As a job seeker, this is one of the most important things you can do to find the perfect career path. A resume or CV can be best described as a career summary giving employers an informative detail about your work history, experiences, accomplishments, skills, and education.

It is best practice to update your resume at least twice a year. Make sure to have the most relevant/clear information at the top of your resume and format your resume and experiences to align with the job position you are applying for. If you need help revising your resume, check out some of these helpful resume tips from Professor Heather Austin.

Keep Applying

During the time of Covid-19, please do not assume that employers are not looking for applicants just because everyone is at home. This is the time where employers are looking for applicants to hire, so you have to keep looking and applying.

Even when you feel like you have applied to so many places and are not hearing back from anyone, keep applying to similar job roles. Also, it’s not enough to just apply. Take things a step further and reach out to job prospects at least one week after applying so that you can check up on your application. You can even use LinkedIn to help you find hiring managers and recruiters that you can contact to inquire about your application.

Read the Job Description!

This part is so important. When you’re busy applying to multiple jobs, please do not just glance over the job title and think that you know what this job will entail. It’s so easy to read the job title and think that you can do the job. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that because when you land the job, you might end up realizing that you hate the job and might quit.

Make sure to carefully read the description of the job and think about how you qualify or have completed the role in your past work. Additionally, it is also important to read the description carefully, so you do not miss out on specific job qualifications or educational requirements that companies are looking for. You do not want to waste your time applying nor do you want to waste the employer’s time while reviewing your application.

Think Positively

When looking for a new job, remember to approach the experience with a positive mindset and know that you will give it your all in finding the right job. It’s okay to know that not everyone will say yes to your application.

In fact, prepare to hear a lot of NOs before you get that one YES. If you struggle with job rejection, know that the situation worked out for the best and on the other side of your life, new opportunities have opened up for you to find the perfect job tailor made just for you. So, keep going!

Be Flexible

There will be moments in your job search where you apply for a job you don’t want to be in. Know that things are not always permanent and remind yourself that this is a job that will keep you steady for the moment. Be open-minded to applying to jobs positions that you’ve never considered before. Considerable job options to look into include side gigs, freelance jobs, contract jobs or even temp jobs.

Though the flexibility is key to finding jobs, please be careful of the places you go to when applying. Now more than ever, so many people are out of work and are struggling to make ends meet. So, be wary of potential job scams using fake job postings to target job seekers.

Network & Make Friends

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How is it possible to network and attend job fairs at a time like this? Well, chances are you never know where your next job opportunity is going to come from. So, seek out virtual job fairs like this one or look for virtual job networking events here.

Who knows, maybe at one of these events, you may even meet a life-long friend that can help you in finding your dream job. Another option to consider is to ask close family and friends to inform you of any job postings or if they hear of any hiring opportunities around the area. See if they know anyone that may be hiring at the moment.

Know Where to Look

As they say it’s who you know that helps you land the job, but it’s also where you look that helps a great deal. Some people prefer looking for jobs on LinkedIn, Monster, Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Empire Workforce Solutions.

Whether you’re seeking professional careers, skilled trade careers, or even transportation careers, Empire Workforce solution is the right partner of choice to help you reach your career goals and land your dream job.

Employment in the trucking industry means a lot of things these days, but one of the most important things is the number of opportunities there are for truck drivers. They have so many options as far as industry, region, temporary work, or using a logistics staffing agency. But as a business, what are your options?

Let’s first consider your needs, are you looking for somebody long-term or maybe just a temporary truck driver? Let’s take that one step further: If you answered the former, you may have a full-time vacancy you need to fill quickly and want to make sure you get the right person in the front seat. Maybe you answered the latter, in that case, you may be interested in hiring a temp driver because you have a driver shortage, a seasonal need, or maybe vacation/LOA coverage. Today, we will explore the idea of what it looks like to hire a short term truck driver and if they have what it takes to fulfill your specific needs.

Hiring a short term truck driver rather than a full-time employee does have its perks. For example, we must first consider the immense time savings in getting a driver to work, and therefore, less down time on equipment. This is widely beneficial for the simple fact that not having a driver in the seat costs the company money. For example, a tractor costs money when it sits vacant and makes money when it is actively in-use and getting a job done! The next reason we see value in hiring temp drivers is that it gives the company an opportunity to test out a particular driver before making the commitment, in the form of cost and time, to hiring a driver full time onto their payroll.

If you’re not completely on-board quite yet, listen to this: At Empire, our drivers are fully vetted with complete DQ files. Including verification of employment, clearing house, drug tests, background checks etc. Plus, all of our drivers are Pro-Tread safety trained!

Therefore, at Empire, hiring temporary drivers does have its perks, and if one or all of these reasons to hire them are of interest to you, then we think a temporary driver is exactly what you need!

Why Empire?

Learn how they work & make sure standards align

It’s important to learn how each staffing partner goes about recruiting candidates for your team to ensure that you have a full understanding of the processes and can jump in at any time if anything needs to be altered. We recommend that you ensure their business processes and technologies are aligned with your present or future business applications, in order to more easily sync and manage the process, start to finish. It is also important to set standards for any forseeable changes, ie. if you need to adjust the hiring criteria, make sure that you find a team that will stick by your company’s non-negotiables and all qualifications are agreed upon beforehand. Our employees are dedicated to taking the time and resources necessary to ensure our alignment!
